בנו רותנברג, בן למשפחה חסידית, עולה לארץ מגרמניה, פרנקפורט בשנת 1933 בהיותו בן 19. הוא מיד פונה ללימודי מתמטיקה ופילוסופיה באוניברסיטה העברית ובשנת 1936 מתגייס ליחידה הנודדת הירושלמית של ההגנה בפיקודו של האלוף יצחק שדה. עם פרוץ מלחמת העולם השנייה מתגייס לשירות המטאורולוגי של חיל האוויר הבריטי ומפרסם את ספרו הראשון בנושא מטאורולוגיה.
בשנת 1945 הוא רוכש את מצלמתו הראשונה, מלמד עצמו צילום, ומתחיל לעבוד כצלם עיתונות. במהלך מלחמת העצמאות הוא כבר משרת כצלם עיתונות רשמי, אך בו בזמן הוא מצלם ומפרסם כתבים בנושא מטאורולוגיה ופילוסופיה.
בשנת 1952 הוא מצטרף כצלם למשלחת הסקר הארכיאולוגי בנגב בראשותו של נלסון גליק, תחום בו הוא מתמחה בעשורים הקרובים הן כארכיאולוג והן כצלם. לאחר מבצע סיני עורך סקר ארכיאולוגי בסיני שבעקבותיו מוציא את הספר תגליות סיני ובשנת 1964 הוא מנהל משלחת חפירות לתמנע. הספר צפונות הנגב, המסכם 15 שנות מחקר (1967) מזכה אותו בפרס אילת.

בנו רותנברג היה בעל תואר דוקטור לפילוסופיה וארכיאולוגיה מאוניברסיטת פרנקפורט, מרצה בכיר לארכיאולוגיה באוניברסיטת תל אביב ומשנת 1971 פרופסור במכון לארכיאולוגיה בלונדון. מחקריו הארכיאולוגיים נמשכו עד 2005.

בנו רותנברג עסק בצילום עד יום מותו בשנת 2012.

Publishes his first book of photographs, depicting animals in Tel Aviv zoo.

War of Independence – serves as official press photographer.

Publishes photograph albums: "Rebirth of Israel" and "The Struggle Over Jerusalem" which document the War of Independence and the first year of the State of Israel's existence. Publishes philosophical essay: "New Ways of Thinking".

Joins archeological research delegation in the Negev as photographer, led by Nelson Glueck.

Publishes photograph album "At the Wayside".

Member of archeological delegation led by Prof. Yohanan Aharoni in Judean desert (archeological assistant and photographer.

Following the Sinai war carries out archeological survey in Sinai and subsequently publishes his book "Discoveries in Sinai".

Tenth anniversary of the State of Israel. Publishes photo album "Portrait of a Homeland" and the book "In the Footsteps of Kings and Rebels" jointly with Prof.Yohanan Aharoni; publishes philosophical book "Man with Himself".

Receives doctorate in Philosophy and Archeology from Frankfurt University.

Heads archeological delegation to Timna (digs continued until 2005) Passover Hagada published with his photographs.

18th anniversary of State of Israel; publishes photo album "Israel at 18".

Publishes book "Secrets of the Negev" summing up 15 years of research; wins Eilat Prize.

Publishes large photo album "The Years of our Lives" with foreword by David Ben Gurion; establishes Nehushtan Pavilion (for Timna digs) in Land of Israel Museum, Tel Aviv.
Nominated senior Archaeology lecturer at Tel Aviv University.

Publishes photo album "The Whole Jerusalem – Events in Israel's Capital" with introduction by David Ben Gurion.

Holds archeological exhibit of the Timna digs at the British Museum, London. The exhibition lasts for three years and is also shown in major museums in England and Germany.

Receives Professorship and begins to lecture at the Archaeological Institute in London.

Publishes the book "Timna" on the digs carried out in Timna.

Carries out surveys and digs in ancient mines in southern Spain for the Archeo-Metallurgy Institute, London.

Publishes book on his research in Spain, jointly with Prof. Blenko Freiherr "Studies in Ancient Mining and Metallurgy in South-West Spain".

Issues eponymous scientific report summing up "The Digs at the Egyptian Mining Temple of Timna".

Publishes book summing up the metallurgical research in Timna and the southern Arava desert "The Ancient Metallurgy of Copper".

Beno Rothenberg was a photographer until his death in 2012.
